Julie Castine

Project Leader, Builders Care

I am originally from Park Forest, a south Suburb of Chicago. My Grandmother was a devout Catholic and taught me how to pray. I remember praying that God would let me be strong and smart like a man so that I would one day be able to fix the house, which had fallen into disrepair, for my Mother and Grandmother.

After a difficult time as a teen, five years in the Navy, and two Persian Gulf deployments spent upholding mission 'Iraqi Freedom' my limited childhood knowledge and faith in God was slim if existent at all. I felt lost, confused, angry and empty. I was devastated when I found out that my childhood mentor and deeply loved Grandmother had passed away. At my lowest point, barely remembering even how to talk to God, the Lord answered the prayers of my heart in the most unexpected way.

While lying in bed, trying to think of a nice way to request from God that he make my life better and give me purpose, I gave up. Needing a distraction from my (seemingly) unanswered prayers I turned on the television for the first time in months. While flipping through channels I paused on what I thought was just another home makeover show. When I realized it was filmed here in Jacksonville, and it was about real people helping people-- people just like my Grandmother, tears welled up in my eyes. After intensely watching the entire Cola May episode, I wiped soul-tears from my eyes to clear my vision enough to write down the name… "Builders Care". That evening I scoured the Builders Care website and sent emails to the staff explaining how deeply the show had touched my heart.

For the next two years I prepared myself for a life in construction ministry, learning everything I could about the industry and re-kindling my relationship with my Heavenly Father. As my commitment to the Navy ended I applied at Builders Care, and multiple other Construction Companies in Jacksonville. I was hired by an Emergency Restoration Company a few days after an Honorable Discharge from the Navy. Almost a year later, while carrying roofing shingles over my shoulder, the Exective Director of Builders Care, and Pastor Chris Simons flagged me off of the ladder I was standing on and offered me my dream job.

I have been working at Builders Care as a Construction Superintenant for almost two years now, and through the grace of God was allowed the opportunity to meet Miss Cola May and testify to God's Glory in front of her church. Thanks to the work of Builders Care and Building a Difference, my mission in life has changed from a self- centric one to a deep desire to serve others in desperate need. I am thrilled beyond words to see the good works of groups like Builders Care celebrated internationally via television. My hope is that multitudes will be as inspired as I was and perhaps dedicate their efforts to "building a difference" in the lives of others. There is simply nothing more rewarding.

As pastor of Celebration Church in Jacksonville, FL, I have had the opportunity to participate in Builders Care events with our church members on their Saturday volunteer events.  I can tell you firsthand there is nothing as satisfying and rewarding as witnessing God move through His people making a real difference in our community with the volunteers of Builders Care.  I am excited to see how these good works will inspire people all over the world in the first season of Building A Difference!
